Heat pumps are an efficient way to heat your home in milder climates – much more energy efficient than a gas furnace. That’s because furnaces take all of their energy from the gas being used, heat pumps take their heat from the surrounding air, meaning that the actual source of the energy is solar. That means that while the most efficient furnace can reach 96.7% efficiency (turning 96.7% of the source energy into actual heat), the efficiency of heat pumps can be as much as 300-400%.
They actually create more heat than electricity they consume. However, as temperatures drop this efficiency drops as well, and if temperatures drop below freezing you will need additional heating sources.

Heat pumps both air condition and heat your home, for year around comfort. The system uses the principles of refrigeration, which means it can be run in a reverse cycle to switch between heating and cooling.
If you are upgrading from an older system or from a standalone furnace there’s a good chance you’ll be able to save substantial amounts on your system’s running costs year after year. The efficiency of a heat pump can reach 300-400% depending on outdoor temperature. Not only does it save you money, but it helps the environment too. We can help you with a free home energy audit to assess your current running costs to show you how much you could save.
Common Heat Pump Issues in Southern California
- Heat pump not switching between heating and cooling
- The reversing valve may be stuck or failing, preventing the system from changing modes. This requires professional diagnosis.
- Outdoor unit running constantly
- While heat pumps run longer cycles than furnaces, non-stop operation may indicate low refrigerant or a defrost control issue.
- Ice on the outdoor unit in winter
- Light frost is normal, but heavy ice buildup suggests the defrost cycle is not activating properly and needs evaluation.
- Reduced heating output during cooler nights
- Heat pumps lose some efficiency below 40 °F. If output drops noticeably, the auxiliary heat strip may not be engaging correctly.
